The M113 APC (armoured personnel carrier) was developed to fill the same role as the WWII M3 half-track carrying infantry up to the edge of the battlefield safe from artillery and long-range fire.
In Vietnam, the mechanised infantry battalions used their M113 ‘tracks’ much more aggressively.
Each cavalry troop had its own battery of heavy mortars. As these were equipped with mortars of the same calibre as the divisional artillery, they gave the battalion a useful artillery capability of its own, without needing to wait for artillery support to be assigned.
Each cavalry troop had its own flame-thrower platoon. The M132 ‘Zippo’ flame-thrower track carried two hundred gallons of flame fuel in the passenger compartment. It was found extremely useful for clearing out Vietnamese positions hidden in dense jungle as a flame-thrower doesn’t need to see the target to be effective.
